Icons And Angels: Just Outside Babylon

For 8 years, the incomplete nature of our 2003 recording sessions in Tulsa, OK has plagued me. What would the entire album of Vanity of Vanities sounded like? I figured I’d never know since I had pretty much written off singing again.  But, after being prodded by Brad to get Icons and Angels going again; and a chance encounter with a young singer/songwriter which caused my wife to convince me to an impromptu and very badly sung (pseudo) performance, motivation set in.

As if by fate, I discovered our 2003 ProTools session tracks.  I realized we were finally able to complete the album, even if it had taken 8 years. With a re-awakened passion, the EP tracks have been re-mastered and mixed. Plus, vocals have been added to all the unfinished songs and vocals for This One’s On Me (from the EP) have been re-recorded..

We’ve decided to name this album Just Outside Babylon because the chorus of that song really summed up where Brad & I were in our life journeys back in 2003. Now in 2011, we’re different men, both married with kids and living in 2 different parts of the country. We’ve left a lot of our old selves behind and this album reflects that subtle transition we were beginning in 2003.

Just Outside Babylon is a look into our past, as well as a reflection of our present. It’s been great to finally get these songs out and into the open. Enjoy the music.

Icons and Angels: Discarded Songs (2011)

After the Tulsa Sessions, Brad went back to Iowa and recorded his Bye Scarlet, Vanity of Vanities album. Meanwhile, we had some great music recorded, but without vocals. I love listening to these songs because it shows Brad’s pure talent at guitar and song writing.

Now, for the first time, we’re making these songs available. If you’ve heard the Bye Scarlet album you’ll recognize most these songs.

Icons and Angels: Vanity of Vanities EP (2003)

In 2003, I was living in Tulsa, OK and Brad was in  Iowa. We’d both been through another year of life experiences and Brad had some really great music ideas and lyrics. He came down to Tulsa, OK for a weekend so we could try to hash out some new tunes. The result was 2 finished songs and a bunch of unfinished songs. It was pretty disappointing, but what we ended up with was pretty good. They were the best recordings we’d ever done and I’m glad to have them.

The road block with finishing this album was that all these  songs were deeply personal songs of Brad’s. They were his DNA and built on a ton of life experiences. He eventually created an album under the moniker Bye Scarlet and named that album “Vanity of Vanities” also. I may be posting that soon, also.

Icons and Angels: Percival Lowell (2002)

After some positive feedback and lessons learned from The Fragile State of Innocence. Brad and I decided we had some more songs we’d like to try and record. We felt like our skills had improved and we could make a better sounding and more complete album.

We pooled our lyrics together, Brad created some wonderful music and we were set to create. Pieced together in our make-shift studio, Percival Lowell was the result. The album was named after the great astronomer Percival Lowell. He predicted the existence of a planet past Neptune and helped with the discovery of Pluto. Later, he was inspired by Giovanni Schiaparelli’s discovery of “canals” on Mars. He devoted much of his life to the study of Mars.

The parallel between Percival Lowell is that we’re all on a great journey of the unknown. This mirrored what Brad and I had been going through in our personal lives. Day to day, we’re all trying to live and figure out this mystery of life. Much of the songs in Percival Lowell are a part of that journey.

Icons and Angels: The Fragile State Of Innocence (2001)

In 2001, two friends locked themselves into a make-shift recording studio to write and record eight songs. After 3 sleepless nights, this is the result. Not perfect, but a snapshot of two friends figuring things out as they went. With no recording experience, they tried, failed and tried again. The Fragile State Of Innocence is the result.
